Hi guys, in response to the number of spam accounts being created (there were 1300+ that I had to manually delete in the space of a week) I set up v3 recaptcha on the site last week. Since doing that there have been 0 new spam accounts created, but looks like it's blocking you guys from entering also - apologies for any inconvenience. I've disabled it now and will continue to monitor, I've already installed multiple plugins to stop unwanted accounts being created but the thing doesn't seem to recognise the real ones either so will just have to keep a close eye on it.

some members are still having trouble logging on having been logged out by the site, they are asked to use a verification code then still cant access the site.

Thanks Yokel, from what I've seen on the backend it was just brownbear getting repeated failed logins, so I've clicked to allow now so should have no further problems.

Captcha v3 has been disabled which was preventing all of the spam accounts - all of them - so probably going to see an uptick in that again but I will keep on top of it.

The only other course of action would be 2FA, which means you have to get a code sent to your phone every single time you log in - which I doubt anyone will appreciated, I hate them myself 🙂

Within 2 hours of disabling the captcha v3 that was causing some people login issues, there have been 7 spam accounts created... between a rock and a hard place at the minute with that, I don't fancy having to clean up 1500 spam users per week to be honest like I did last time, but at same time not good that members having difficulty logging in. I will see what the situation is like after 24 hours but may have to reinstate it in some form. It's possibly to do with the browser or VPN the member is using causing the issues.

Hi BP, with the extra security disabled I can get in (stating the obvious as I am here talking to you now 🤣 ) but when the security is in place I can't. It sends me to the Word Press verification page and then I cannot proceed beyond that, whatever I try.

I do understand it is a fine line but, I suspect the lack of members and posting at present may be down to others having the same difficulties.

I obviously wish to continue using the forum if I can, I think there is a need for a British prepping forum and this, I think, is the right one for the job 👍

there is certainly a need for a new British prepping forum, all the old ones have got very stale and in some cases little traffic on them, I agree with you about this one fitting the bill but the logging on problems are a concern and could deter new members from joining.

@yokel I'm with you, this is a really good forum and has the potential do great things - all credit to British Prepper for creating it. Hopefully the logging in issues are only a temporary blip and we can Continue to develop the forum for a long time to come.

there are still at least 12 suspicious accounts listed on the members pages.

as a moderator on another prepping forum I remove these daily as soon as they appear.

Thanks guys. Yes, since disabling the extra security level the spam accounts are piling up again, but I'd rather just have no problems logging in for you chaps so will aim to clear it every so often to keep on top of it.

Yes I think when I was creating the site what you say is true about the other forums, this sector is largely American and many things don't apply to us over here, everything from what foods you can buy for preps to gun possession etc.

I tried to reach out to preppers by linking (relevantly on topic) to articles on British Prepper on many of the existing forums but as you can imagine they were all removed, so I did the same on Reddit as there are lots of preppers on there but still the links were removed so hard to get new people in.

However, all of the content on the website is fully optimised for search engines and is original content (I am actually a writer by trade), so in a couple of months from now the website itself should start ranking in Google for lots of key prepping terms, in turn bringing people to the forum. If anyone else has ideas how to expand the reach that would be great, I do have a Twitter account for BP.

Anyway, glad everything is working fine again, I'll be a proper site admin from here on out 🙂

I'll be changing the hosting soon too as the site is quite slow, GoDaddy placed the server in USA by default 🙄 but I will move it to UK when this current contract ends in July

I keep typing out a post then when I click on add reply it wipes my post and I have to do it all over again.
